Task 1.3 - Preliminary Evaluation

After showing our preliminary film to the class, the piece needed to be evaluated not just by our group, but also the class as a whole. The film was generally good but our group and the class picked out some errors and mistakes.

The film had a very good composition of shots and showed off the fast paced action we were trying to produce. Not only was the film kept at a high tempo, it showed the emotion of the protagonist. The fast pace can say he is stressed and angry about his daughter being kidnapped by the antagonist. There was many quick cuts to show the pace Shane is walking at and when he goes to walk in to the room, the cuts are quick to show how angry he is when he says, "I've come here, now tell me where my daughter is!" The fast pace had been maintained until the protagonist had calmed down and sat down. The protagonist was still in a bad mood but was not going to snap and the antagonist was dominant in the situation. The protagonist almost snaps by drawing out a pistol from his blazer yet the calm antagonist tells him to stop - "There will be consequences" and "Do you know who I am?", making out the antagonist is powerful and a figure of authority. The film obeyed the 180 degree rule although it was exaggerated at times.

There was a continuity error in the film, when the protagonists rushes angrily in to the room, he leaves the door open but when he enters the room at the point where the protagonist is pointing at the antagonist, the door is closed. There is also a lot of wasted space around the characters, at times, realising the audience could be distracted by another object in the room. As well as wasted space, it occurred to us the shots were badly composed especially when the protagonist is in the process of sitting down. Another good example was the antagonist standing up to walk out the room and the audience can only see half of his head. When the camera was behind the antagonist and he was facing the protagonist, the 180-degree rule was exaggerated leaving wasted space and the shoot looking badly composed.
